It is officially conference season!
I don’t know how YOU feel about conferences, but they always put me a little on edge. I mean, going to the right conferences and meeting the right people is an incredible way to SPEED UP SALES. But all of those people you have to talk to? And get to know? And approach in an appropriate manner?

It’s exhausting!
Here is one simple thing that I like to keep in mind when I am attending conferences. It helps me a lot and I hope it will help you, too.
People Like To Be Included
They may not look like it. They may not act like it. But, fundamentally, they like to be included. Even if they turn an invitation down, they like to be asked!
Here’s how to use this to your advantage at your next conference.
Be the person who includes people!
My favorite question to ask people when they are attending a conference (and it’s a great conversation-opener) is: “What are you most hoping to get out of this conference?” This opens them up to talking about what is important to them! They will be interested in the conversation. It is about them, after all.
Then, I like to ask “Is there anyone here you are really hoping to run into? I know conferences can be hit-and-miss. Tell me who I should introduce you to if I run into them.” Now you are both part of a game and you’re on the same side!
After that, you can start bringing others into the conversation. If there is someone standing nearby, or maybe even off to the side, pull them in. Ask them if you want to join them. Introduce them to your new connection and give a brief synopsis of what they do.
You are on your way to being a valuable person to know at the conference. And, many times, people will ask you the same stuff back: “Why are you here? Who do YOU most want to meet?” Now you have boots-on-the-ground and an easy way to join a table if you feel stranded at later times in the event.
Now you are the Conference-Attending Rock-Star!
You have made people feel important. So, now you are important to them.
Make the most of the situation and…
Love ‘em ALL UP!
